What’s Next?

What’s Next?

So, what’s next for me? My short-term goals involve exploring various areas as quickly as possible to determine if I have an interest in them and if I’d like to pursue them as a career. Since I’m just starting out, I want to see how broad my interests can be. After I graduate, I’d like to enter the workforce because of my own curiosity. I want to discover if graphic and web design are genuinely the right fit for me or if they are merely stepping stones toward my broader objectives.

Applying Locally

I intend to begin my job search locally. Sometimes people dream of going far away but overlook opportunities close to home. I plan to stay in Montreal, unless I find a compelling reason to move, such as a course or job that’s only available elsewhere. While I don’t have immediate plans to move, it’s something on my bucket list, and I aspire to do it within the next five years. Moving would contribute to my personal growth and independence. Nevertheless, my initial focus is on exploring opportunities in Montreal to find the right fit.

Not sure, but not stressed.

So, what am I looking for? I suppose I’m seeking a workplace where I can fully unlock my creativity, a place that’s friendly and welcoming, but also somewhat competitive to keep me motivated. I thrive on challenges and engagement in my work. I’m still uncertain whether I’d prefer a career more centered on photography, illustration, or web design. I’ll find out eventually and make that decision based on what I find most appealing in the actual workforce.

Journey To The Top

Journey To The Top

At the moment, I’m not entirely sure about my exact destination, but I have a clear aim – to reach the top. Regardless of the path I choose, I aspire to excel in my chosen field. Whether it’s working for a company or running my own business, my goal is to secure a higher position, although not becoming the boss of a company, unless it’s my own.

I hold the belief that working for someone else can only take you so far. On the other hand, being your own boss and building connections as you climb the ladder can lead to greater opportunities if managed effectively. I dream of enhancing my personal brand to a level where I can collaborate with larger companies on projects.

Dream Collab

For instance, I’ve always been passionate about sneakers and their designs, which makes me a “sneakerhead.” It’s a dream of mine to one day collaborate with Nike, not necessarily to create my own line of sneakers, but to incorporate my designs into the marketing of their shoes or similar projects.

The Method

In pursuit of this goal, I envision a journey of continuous learning and growth. I aim to gain valuable experience and expertise in my chosen field, whether it’s design, marketing, or entrepreneurship. Developing a strong skill set will be crucial to reaching the heights I aspire to.

Additionally, I understand the importance of networking and building relationships within the industry. I believe that by connecting with professionals and experts in my field, I can gain valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration. These connections can be vital in achieving my goal of working with larger companies and making a significant impact.

In summary, I believe that by continuously improving my skills, building a strong personal brand, and gaining meaningful connections, I can turn my dreams of collaboration and achievement into reality.

Vernissage?

Vernissage?

So, what’s a vernissage? Basically, it’s a fancy term for a private viewing of artwork before they’re shown to the public. Our teachers chose it for our event, which makes sense because it’s like our first big moment to show off our graphic design work before we officially graduate.

But here’s the thing

We had to make posters to promote the event around campus. There was a little competition between all the third-year graphic design students, where each student would make a poster, then we would choose the best one to be displayed around the school. Spoiler alert, my poster didn’t win the competition— rightfully so, the person that won deserved it. (My poster is the picture above, multiple versions were made to promote on social media as well, this is the twitter version). My issue is not with the competition, it’s with the process. Teachers were very intent on naming it a vernissage and vernissage only. The problem I see in that is, when advertising is made for events or whatever, the audience should be considered. The audience in this case being students and staff around campus. Majority being students. With that fact in mind, no student knows what a vernissage is. I asked about 10 people, (some friends, co-workers, older people), 0/10 knew what it was, 2/10 kind of had an idea but weren’t sure.

T’was Fun!

Now, I get the whole fancy vibe the word gives off, but for the posters, it would’ve been better to use simpler language. Stuff like “design expo,” “art exhibit,” or “art expo” would’ve made more sense to the students and staff who’d actually see them. It’s just that for the poster competition having the liberty of choosing different names would’ve allowed the designers for more versatility.
Anyways though. I had a great time at the actual vernissage. It was nice to dress up for a change, and seeing everyone’s artwork was pretty inspiring.
